I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Ideas to fund the Mission

Ideas for Societies or Zones to Fund the Mission:

"That others may see Jesus in our giving and our living"

Have a Mite Box Sunday where the large mite box is put out one time a month for all members of the congregation to participate in the mite offerings with 'donations'.

Some societies offer muffins on a specific Sunday as a 'thanks' to those who by turning in a mite box. Be careful to make sure this isn't construed as a 'muffin sale' or 'bake sale'. The goal is to give a muffin to those who participate. Some call it 'Muffins for Mites'.

A clue if you do have a bake sale, do not mark the items, let people give what they choose to give.

Highlight various Mission Grants throughout the year by means of a bulletin board display for LWML. Always tie this to the mite offerings. The Mite Grant posters and devotions on the web site (http://lwml.org) are really helpful for this.

Take orders for apple pies in the fall - then get together and have some peeling apples, some making crust, some rolling crust, some adding seasoning and sugar to the apples, you get the idea. Then freeze them for the sale with all funds (after expenses) going to mites.

Host an Advent or Lenten Dinner prior to the church service.  Congregation members gives a free will offering for their dinner which goes to mites.

Sponsor a cookie walk in which a large variety of home baked cookies are offered.  Customers choose cookies and purchase by the pound. All funds are given to mites.

Have an aluminum can collection center for the whole congregation to bring items (soda cans, pull tabs, aluminum cans) for recycling. These can be taken to a local scrap dealer who pays so much per pound, and that money is given strictly to mites.

Have a silent auction with all proceeds designated to mites. Theme ideas include: white elephant items, Christmas ornaments, jewelry. The attendees place their bids on a card by each item and at the end of the day, the highest bidder wins! It's fun and quite a successful mite promotion. You could also do a Chinese Auction as well, which is very similar.

"Noisy Collections" for mites. Metal coffee cans, decorated with colorful paper are passed at a designated time in the service. When the coins are tossed in they make lots of noise! The congregation is invited to throw in the coins and shake the container as it is passed. It's lots of fun and they are also encouraged to keep shaking but add some silent bills into the container as well. Children especially enjoy making a “Joyful Noise” for mites.

Have a Mite Box Sunday each month, which serves as a reminder for Mite Boxes to be brought from home and emptied, but also an additional opportunity to give more.

During December, have a “Don’t Spend a Cent for Christmas” campaign. Congregation members are encouraged NOT to make exact change, but instead put all coins in the mite box after a day of shopping.

Post the posters provided by the Public Relations Department in prominent places to keep the LWML mission present in the minds of congregation members.

If you have a successful idea for FUNDING THE MISSION, send it to Billie Lelle to be published on this website.
